Fire Station roundabout and Midland Road Love Lane junction. Update No. 2 – end August 2024

news update

Further to our first update on 2 August, in gaining access for the works on the centre of the Fire Station/Watermoor roundabout, our contractors Montel took a comprehensive set of soil samples from the site, which were sent to the laboratory for testing as part of usual practice for such works. The results have identified low levels of asbestos. It is likely the materials found are from the former use of the site which was part of a railway yard and coal store.

The levels found are very low and do not pose a threat to the local community, however, we are taking the safe removal of the contaminated materials seriously and the appropriate processing will take place off-site. As a result, Montel will be installing a Dust Suppression System in the form of barriers and screening, while also damping down the area to minimise any dust created by the removal process. This system is being installed from the week commencing 26th August.

The Love Lane junction and Midland Road work is progressing well, and no contamination has been identified in this area. Montel has installed new road drainage in the first section and are waiting for BT to complete their cable diversion works before Montel can progress to the next section on Midland Road. This phase of works is on schedule and is due to complete late October / early November 2024.

Contact details for traffic management and Montel will be posted to the news section of our website and each of our social media platforms shortly. Signs should also be displayed near the roadworks.

A further update will be posted mid-late September.
