Street Names at The Steadings, Cirencester
The streets at The Steadings are named through Cotswold District Council’s street naming and numbering process. Each phase follows a single theme, agreed with the council, that reflects the history of the land and the people connected to it.
Phase 1A – 68 homes off Wilkinson Road
Phase 1A takes an equestrian theme, honouring the family who founded and ran the world-renowned Talland School of Equitation at Church Farm, Siddington, from 1958. The Phase 1A land was once part of Church Farm and grazed the school’s horses.
Phase 2A – first 100 homes reached from Spratsgate Lane
Phase 2A theme is based on the Thames & Severn Canal. The canal was completed in 1789 and linked the River Thames at Lechlade to the Stroudwater Navigation near Stroud and then to the River Severn. The route of the canal went through the fields to the south of The Steadings. Although it was abandoned in 1927 The Cotswold Canals Trust is working to restore the canal.
Phase 2D – the second phase of 129 homes reached along The Steadings Way
The street names for this phase are not yet available, however, they will follow the theme of the Cotswold Arts and Craft movement. In the late 19th and early 20th century some London-based architects and designers moved to Sapperton to embrace traditional craftsmanship, vernacular architecture and simple handmade design – as a rejection of industrial mass production.
